fun with long exposures

I've always wanted to try my hand at long exposures, after seeing some of the awesome things that can be done using that technique, but never managed to make it so... until last week when Jordan looked at the sky one night from our back porch and told me to try it out.  I eagerly grabbed my camera and tripod, as I never have the thought when I'm able to actually do it.

Turned out kinda neat, right?  Especially considering it was 8pm and pretty dark.  I tried taking one of Jordan outside but the settings were all wrong... however, I like the way it looked too:

Eerie, right?  Well, not as eerie as the ones we managed when we took the camera into our kitchen and busted out the bike lights:

The first two look like his soul (you know, if I believed in those, anyway) trying to escape out of his face, and the last one it straight up looks like it's melting.

Not bad for trying to draw a large-scale Batman symbol in the dark with a bike light, eh?

That last one of the stairs was somewhere around a 3 1/2 minute exposure.  I'm pretty sure Jordan was huffing and puffing after that one, but it turned out so cool!

And, naturally, because we're both 12 year old boys at heart:

Happy Monday, everyone.  ;)

  1. THESE ARE AWESOMEEEEEE!!! I am super stoked on how they all turned out. You two are the best. Ian won't do light painting and stuff with me. As a snooty photographer, he thinks they are for hipsters and teenagers. UGH, I KNOW!

    1. I'm trying to find a way to say "Well that just means you have to come to California so we can draw dicks in the dark together!" that doesn't sound so... strange. Oh well! Goin' for the gusto!!

If Ian's photographs weren't so good, I'd say that that's an awfully hipstery thing to say, but he's too talented to not get a "Get Out Of Jail Free" card with a statement like that. ;)

I'm excited about them too! It was really neat having Jordan participate so willingly and actively, as usually he wants to stay away from the front of a camera lens. We had fun, and fun is the coolest!

MAN I AM SO CAFFEINATED RIGHT NOW IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY

    1. Haha, yeah, the tripod is essential! Find it and make it happen -- it's so much fun! Those pictures of Jordan's face kinda give me the heebie-jeebies but they're just too eerily cool. :]

  3. These turned out great! Literally lol'd at the PENIS. Scrolling down, did not expect that. I actually have to do this for a photography assignment this week, so I may post some of mine, too :p.

    1. Hahaha, I admit, the photos took a quick left turn to silly with that one, but what is life without laughter at dick jokes? I mean, really!

Ooh, I want to see what you come up with! Please do a post about them. :]

  6. (what my real Internet persona meant to say was...)

Hmmm...I don't know which one is my favourite. The stairs or the penis.

They are all fabulous, though, and I think this would be so much fun to try now that it's getting dark out so soon at home here, but still isn't icy cold in the evenings. Weekend project!!
