the first flight of the USS Ursus

The NCC-1868, to be exact!  There's a starship bridge simulation game called Artemis, and our friend Stephanie was awesome enough not just to buy it and coordinate a playthrough, but to be an absolutely killer host!  Complete with starship-y snacks, name badges, and custom mousepads (seriously), Stephanie made the experience immersive and awesome.

In a nutshell, in Artemis you have 6 people: the Captain to give orders, and various positions you would find on a real spaceship bridge:  weapons, communications, engineering, science, and helm (for navigation).  You all set up 5 different computers and have a screen set up as the main viewer, and you basically roleplay as though you were actually manning an actual spaceship.  Nerdy?  Absolutely.  Fun?  Fuckin' ALL THE WAY.

So I donned my Engineering yellow and Jordan put on his Command red and we spent the evening on the Starship Ursus.  I manned the helm, and I only managed to kill us by flying the ship into a singularity or mines twice. I would call that a success!

Jordan, pretty stoked to be Captain.

I still have no idea what's going on here, especially there on the right

Don't worry, he was eventually talked into putting down the phaser.
Stephanie in her handmade science outfit, looking darling.
I got to sport the vulcan ears for a minute.  Lookin' all intellectual and shit.

Getting Artemis was already on our to-do list, but this experience definitely solidified our own purchase -- our living room will become a bridge soon enough!  I don't think we'll order custom mousepads, however... that's reserved for the Ursus.

  1. Oh my goodness, this looks like SO MUCH FUN. And my nerdy friends and I NEED something new and exciting for our next shindig! (They're getting repetitive.) I am not deeply familiar with the intricacies of the Trek-verse, but I am Browncoat enough to be enthusiastic about spaceship-gaming anyway!

    1. Ooh, you should try it! It doesn't really have to be too Star Trek-based, you could just play it as a starship simulator and not get too much into the roleplay aspect of it -- or at least not too much into the Trekkie-esque roleplay of it. ;) Give it a shot! I would love to hear what you think!

  2. Haha. You're a nerd and I love it! So funny. I would be so out of my element in a situation like that. I would give it a go, but I wouldn't quite know what to do. (Says the girl who hasn't played video games since the Super Nintendo.)

    1. Haha, aw, takin' it back! I remember that "Things I Don't Understand" post of yours, and my lengthy reply... ;) It's certainly intimidating at first -- hell, I play a lot of video games and even I was like "uhh, whaaaat is all this" looking at the set-up. I played one of the easier positions, and it got a lot easier as the night went on!

  3. Oh this looks awesome! I know what my darlin' dearest is getting for Christmas for sure now. Also, you guys are extra awesome for dressing the part. I love it. I just love it all so much.

    1. It was so much fun! I would do it again in a heartbeat. :] And I'm just sayin', if I received Artemis as a Christmas gift, the giver would get massive awesome bear hugs from me for the rest of the day.

  4. FANTASTIC!!! We're been talking about getting into Artemis for a while. Also, YAY ANOTHER STEPHANIE TREKKIE! What is it about Stephanie's and Star Trek? sheesh. lol.

    1. OOOOH GET ARTEMIS! You guys would absolutely LOVE it, I have no doubt. And if you've got dudes willing to play from the get-go, splitting the game cost is chump change. ;D

And if you don't wear your DS9 uniforms (those were the suits you wore to Dallas Comic Con, right?) while you play, I will be gravely disappointed.

  5. Awesome! My friends had a party a while ago and all the guys played Artemis. I could have played, but we had about 15 people wanting to play and I didn't feel like waiting. lol

    1. Haha, I hope you play someday. It's a blast, and if you're with the right people, it's immersive and wonderful. There's nothing more delightfully nerdy than being all like, "Captain, engaging Warp 4" and then having someone respond with "Very good, Helm. Take us in!"

Man, all I want to do is work and live on a starship. Humans better get on it already, I'm already 25.

  6. Rockin'! Mike (my room mate who was going to kill himself with the phaser) and I have been writing a six-mission season for the next time we play! It'll be much more accurate Star-Trek wise, with the ships, planets, space stations, and species that we all know and love! I can't wait to play it again!

    1. YES! AWESOME. You can count on Jordan and I being there... you know, as long as we're invited, of course. ;)

Thanks again for being such a wonderful host! (And for linking to your blog -- didn't know you had one! Looks like I've got reading to do.)
